Double Rainbow, all the way……

Double Rainbow all the wayFull-on Double Rainbow all the way…….  Alaska is magical!!!!

I have now lived life and am ready to move on (after experiencing a true double rainbow) – all the way……

We took this picture traveling just north of Denali.  This is a county park that we overnighted.  Note, the picture was taken at 1am (morning) – look how bright everything is.

Yet another magical Alaskan moment.

Maine – Made it!

Maine-ly, I no nothing about Maine…….

– When I worked for a Boston company a lot of people would go to Maine for the weekend, or on vacation. All said it was beautiful.

– the Appalachian Trails ends there (or begins) depending on your direction. We are Nobo’s (Northbounders), so the trail ends there for us.

– Acadia National Park (on list to visit)

– L.L. Bean flagship store (open 24/7/365)

– Lobsters, lobsters, lobsters

– rocky coastline and cold water

– from Florida (on the map) it’s a long way up

The plan: Eat lots of Lobsters, visit LL Bean, visit Acadia, and maybe stop by the end of the AT.

RV Mods – Storage Wars

My wife is freaking out, panicked, “concerned” about storage. Mainly, where to put homeschool items, where to put 10 sets of towels, and where to put her belongings.

Me, my answer, is to wait until you move in, figure out what storage items are needed, buy micro-towels (very absorbent, very thin), and take as many drawers as she wants. To be honest, I can’t imagine in spacial terms without living in the environment. This however has no impact on my wife who wants things pre-ready vs. taking the risk of never being done. In other words, my wife ain’t happy, so it’s off to the RV and hardware store we go.

With Labradoodle in hand we hit the hardware store…….

This is the first project. It’s at the end of a closet that divides the kids room in half.

Four cabinet pieces, angle braces, and lots of screws later, voila – homeschool storage center!!!!

And I get lots of hero points………

(I do have a nagging thought about adding too much weight, but MJ tells me that’s silly. We shall see)

Roadside Oddities – Concrete Monoliths, Ocala FL

Deep within a forested highway median are ancient concrete monoliths. Without written history one would think they were ancient gateways built by aliens.

Instead they are just remnants of a bridge to nowhere, built by our government in the 1930’s. They were planning on having a Florida Cargo Canal (think Panama Canal, but in Florida). The canal would connect the Atlantic to the Gulf of Mexico and would save having to transverse around the tip of Florida.

Seems like a huge effort and a waste of money, guess someone else thought the same. The history that never was……

Brooke is studying geometry and think it looks like a pi symbol.

Roadside Oddities – Tervis Tumblers, Venice FL

We decided to visit Tervis Tumblers ( in order to get some drinking glasses for our RV travels. The thought is that each of us could have our own unique and identifiable glassware. This would save on having multiple glasses. (Plus MJ always accuses me of leaving glasses around the house, a no-no in an RV. Now I’m scaled down to two and only two (Orange of course)).

Tervis Key Selling Points:
– keeps drinks cold
– keeps drinks hot
– reduces condensation
– lifetime guarantee
– dishwasher safe
– virtually unbreakable
– personalized designs
– made in America
– ecologically logical

For years we have traveled on I-75 passing by this giant tumbler. Finally we have stopped to pay homage. We were hoping to be able to go on a factory tour but they are currently not offering.

About 7 miles down the road is the Tervis factory store. There are so many choices and various themes to choose from. Half the fun is finding glasses for yourself and for others. What a huge selection.

A good time was had by all. Here the themes that we chose.

Robbie – Orange (two)
MJ – Dragonfly (two)
Brooke – Mustache and Captain America
Seth – Salt Life and Bacon
Scout – Ladybugs (two)

I submitted visit to RoadsideAmerica, here is our post

Downsizing – Books

I made it through the Atlanta airport without buying any books. That is a huge feat and an accomplishment.

I love books (especially cookbooks). But books are heavy and cumbersome. Storing them hardly pays and make little sense.

Just to give scope of my “book” struggle, I believe thirty banker boxes were given to my “Outlaw” to sell on Amazon. We were going to put them in a garage sale but she convinced us they would make more money selling online. Well, she was right, and has now sold over $1,000 dollars!!!! That’s in used books, my used books. Amazing. Just think how many I had…….

So how did I go cold turkey? I didn’t. I went to the library and got a library card, then downloaded books to my iPad. Also online magazines, and books from Amazon. All digital.

I am packing 2 digital library books, 5 kindle books, and 8 digital magazines. How awesome is that?

If I can’t get it digital then I hold off. I hold off for weeks (now months) and truly debate if I want a hard copy for a book. No suffering here, I’ve gone digital!!!!!

Yes, there is a struggle about not having a book in hand, however it is nice to have digital spread amongst my devices. Highlighting and searching them is easy.

I think I’m a digital convert. Time will tell……..

Downsizing – Punch Bug, no tag back

Just sold my two VW’s. They were meant to be working projects to do with the kids. In a cruel twist of fate both engines blew up while driving home for the first time. The grey was bought in 06, drove it from Ohio to upstate Florida (the engine blew). Then the baby-blue was bought in 2011 in Tampa FL and blew 30 min from home. I have not had good luck with VW’s to say the least.

They have sat awaiting engine work and the time to do it. Seth was sentimental to the grey, Brooke to the baby-blue. I tried to sell the grey a few years ago, it brought tears to Seth, so I kept it. Brooke dreamed about driving the blue upon turning 16. Now with fulltime RVing on the horizon it was time to sell. This time, no tears from the kids. They have accepted change and that it’s time to let go.

So punch bug, no tag back!!!!!

I broke Google Maps……

Google Map of our Travel Interests

Oh man, it seems like I “broke” Google Maps.

Basically for the past month and a half I have been starring my google map when I find something interesting to do or see (National Parks, State Parks, Campgrounds, Fun Attractions, Learning Experiences, Historic Places, Roadside Attractions). You know, fun road stuff. If I read about some place in a blog, book, magazine – I put a star on my map. If I come upon a list – battle grounds, fossil parks, best waterfalls, outdoor places, best places to eat – I put stars on the places.

Seems like in 1 1/2 months of doing this, I have come up to 1,084 stars……

Now I don’t think I will ever visit (or would want to) all of these places. They are more or less interesting places in a region/state/city. If we happen to be in the area, then we will look at the offerings. Then based on time and interest, we might do it.

The grand plan was to keep starring the map, and then use it as a future travel resource. Simple.

Problem: My map stars are disappearing

I was working on a fossil park list and noticed Dinosaur National Monument was not starred on my map (I had done that one about a month ago). Upon further investigation I found that a lot of my earlier maps stars had fallen off!! Thinking I reached some “star-threshold” (I am at over 1,000 map stars), I started to research the problem. Results, nothing, nada, no cited problem. I then opened a post in the Google Map Forums, and guess what, Google responded. They have not seen this behavior and are now investigating.

I “broke” Google Maps – how awesome is that !!!
